Horse Riding

A custom made network

140 km of bridle-path allows you to discover the National Park by horse. 85 % of it is still earth road. Together with the unique character of the ‘Hoge Kempen’ National Park, this network creates an unforgettable experience for horse lovers. Both riders and carriages are always welcome.

Like the cycling network, this network is a junction system that allows you to create your own trip. All the routes are clearly marked. It is possible to follow the routes in both directions. More information on the distances between the different junctions can be found on the horse riding maps.

Horse riding and carriage map ‘Hoge Kempen’ National Park

The different horse-riding centres of the region offer the perfect starting point to discover the Park by horse. They can offer information, there are parking lots available, they provide racks to tie down the horses and water holes for them to drink. The map details all the possible resting areas where you are welcome to take a short break or to spent the night. All you still have to do is decide how long you want to stay: half a day, a full day, or maybe even several days.

To explore the region, the map is an invaluable tool. And not just to plan your route, on the backside you will several suggestions for trips or the contact details of local vets and blacksmiths. It costs € 5 and is for sale at the tourist promotion offices, local riding schools or through www.nationaalpark.be.

Practical information

The network is open for both riders and carriages.

Although some of the forest roads have been closed off by levers, there is always a passage next to them. We do have to remark that the passages are wide enough for a carriage-and-pair, but not for a carriage-and-four.
During the winter, the paths are not always in the best state. Due to the natural challenges offered by the terrain (slopes, loose sand) this requires a certain experience of the rider.

Sometimes the bridle-path intersects with a hiking or cycling path, even though we try to avoid this. Please allow the hikers and cyclist to pass. Keep in mind that not everyone is comfortable around horses.

Because of land clearing projects and agriculture, we cannot always guarantee the quality of the roads. Every year we aim to restore some of these roads.
