‘Hoge Kempen’ – A database for heritage

In October 2009, the project agency ‘Hoge Kempen’ National Park of the non-profit organization Regionaal Landschap Kempen en Maasland initiated a feasibility study in name of the Flemish Government, department ‘Ruimte en Erfgoed’ and the city ‘Genk’. This study will take about 12 months and aims to thoroughly investigate whether the ‘Hoge Kempen’ National Park and the neighbouring colliery sites could be nominated as UNESCO World Heritage. The results of this study will be catalogued in different ways.

The study was developed to answer the following questions

·         Does the subject of this study meet the criteria and requirements set by the UNESCO World Heritage Convention of 1972?
·         Does the analysed area have the necessary quality concerning content and general value of heritage?
·         Which are the problem areas within the analysed area and how does it compare to other, similar World Heritage sites?

To analyse the quality of the area, a system for gathering and processing data has been developed. Via a uniform format, the different heritage values of the ‘Hoge Kempen’ could be registered, continuously, now and in the future, into the heritage database. The main aim is to cover as much territory in the region as possible. With regard to content, it will therefore often refer to already existing instruments and sources.

Each heritage element in the database is defined on an overview map of the ‘Hoge Kempen’ to be able to easily locate them and to visualise the concentration of clusters of elements. The database can be used in different ways. Firstly, here is a system of check boxes to search for a specific category of heritage elements, where they are located, from which time area they originate, and so on. Secondly, you can use a search engine where you can enter specific search terms. In the list with the results you can than select the file of the heritage element you want to know more about. All information entered in the database will be visible, together with the location on the map, recent high quality pictures and references to other files that have a connection with the one you selected.

The idea is to keep adding information to the database, so feel free to send us all the information you have.
